The Dallas County Promise helps students who graduate from a participating Dallas County high school pay for college at UNT. The program covers tuition that is left over after all your other financial aid is applied. This is called a "last-dollar" award. This page details how it works specifically at UNT. Requirements, deadlines, and processes vary at other partner schools.

Two Ways to Participate

There are two paths into the Dallas Promise-UNT Program. Find yours below.

Award duration: up to 8 semesters / 4 years at UNT
Only 4 semesters / 2 years if you earned an Associate Degree in high school

Award duration: up to 4 semesters / 2 years at UNT
Must complete the associate degree at Dallas College before transferring. Students who transfer without one are not eligible

For students graduating in 2027, enrolling Fall 2027-2028. You qualify if you meet ALL of the following:

Family Income	Total family adjusted gross income (AGI) of $100,000 or less
Grant Eligibility	Meet eligibility criteria for the Pell Grant or TEXAS Grant Program
Residency	Texas resident for tuition purposes
Start Term	Start classes at UNT in the Fall semester right after high school graduation
Continuous Enrollment	Enroll in both Fall AND Spring every year. You cannot skip a semester, and the award covers Fall/Spring only, not Summer or mini-terms

For students graduating with an associate's degree in 2026-2027. You qualify as a Dallas Promise transfer student if you meet ALL of the following:

Applies to Fall 2026 through Spring 2027 transfers. First, tell your Dallas College Success Coach you plan to transfer to UNT by January 15, 2027, during your first year at Dallas College. Then complete the following:

Be Admitted to UNT

By January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027, or by December 1, 2026 for Spring 2027. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.

Submit FAFSA or TASFA

By January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027, or by May 1, 2027 for Spring 2027 (including all verification documents).

Whether you're a first-time student or a Dallas College transfer heading to UNT for Fall 2027, both your UNT admission application and your FAFSA or TASFA are due by this date. Spring 2027 transfers have separate deadlines. See Path 2 above.

Renewal Requirements

Keeping the award for 2028-2029 and beyond

Once you are at UNT, you must meet all of the following each year to keep your award:

Be enrolled in 12 or more credit hours by the 12th class day each Fall and Spring (only UNT credits count)
Successfully complete at least 24 UNT credit hours by the end of each academic year
Keep a cumulative UNT GPA of 2.50 or higher, checked each Fall and Spring
Continue to qualify for financial aid and keep an SAI of 6,478 or less
Complete your bachelor's degree within 8 consecutive semesters (4 years) if entering with your high school diploma
Complete your bachelor's degree within 4 consecutive semesters (2 years) if entering with a high school diploma + associate degree from Dallas College
Submit your FAFSA or TASFA every year by the deadline

Once enrolled at UNT as a transfer student, you must meet all of the following:

Straight answers

Does Dallas County Promise cover all of my costs at UNT?

No. DCP is a last-dollar award that covers tuition and mandatory fees left over after all your other financial aid is applied. You'll still need to budget for housing, meal plans, books, supplies, transportation, parking, and other living expenses.

What's the difference between Path 1 and Path 2?

Path 1 is for students who go straight to UNT after high school. The award lasts up to 8 semesters (4 years), or 4 semesters (2 years) if you earned an associate degree in high school. Path 2 is for students who first complete an associate degree at Dallas College and then transfer to UNT. The award lasts up to 4 semesters (2 years) at UNT. You must complete the associate degree before transferring to qualify for Path 2.

What is a Student Aid Index (SAI), and why does it matter?

Your SAI comes from your FAFSA or TASFA and is used to determine financial need. To qualify for and keep the Dallas Promise-UNT award, your SAI must be 6,478 or less, and your total family adjusted gross income must be $100,000 or less.

What happens if I skip a Fall or Spring semester?

For Path 1 students, stopping out or dropping enrollment for a full Fall or Spring semester makes you ineligible for the program and the Last-Dollar tuition grant. For Path 2 transfer students, sitting out one full Fall or Spring semester at UNT requires you to submit an appeal to continue in the program. Either way, the award only covers Fall and Spring; it does not cover Summer or mini-terms.

Can I use the award for Summer classes?

No. The Dallas Promise-UNT award is for Fall and Spring semesters only. It does not cover Summer sessions or mini-terms.

Can I get outside scholarships too?

Yes, you can receive outside private, endowed, and departmental scholarships. Visit UNT Scholarships to explore options. You must still accept all federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships you're eligible for.

Can I transfer my award to another school, or give it to someone else?

No. You may not transfer the award to another college or university, return to UNT and receive funds while attending another institution, transfer the award to another person, or receive a refund for unused Dallas County Promise dollars.

Are international students eligible?

International students are currently not eligible for the Dallas County Promise program at UNT.

Do I need to file FAFSA or TASFA every year?

Yes. To keep your award, you must submit your FAFSA or TASFA every year by the deadline, and continue to meet the SAI and income requirements.
