At UNT Dallas, the Dallas County Promise is funded by UNT Dallas institutional funds. It's a last-dollar, tuition-only program that helps students who graduate from a participating Dallas County high school pay for college once all other financial aid is applied. Funding is available only for a student's first bachelor's degree. All Promise Scholars are paired with a UNT Dallas success coach and academic advisor for ongoing support. This page details how it works specifically at UNT Dallas. Requirements, deadlines, and processes vary at other partner schools.

Two Ways to Participate

There are two paths into the Dallas County Promise program at UNT Dallas. Find yours below.

Award duration: up to 4 academic years, or until you earn your first bachelor's degree, whichever comes first
Both students with just a high school diploma and students who also earned an associate degree are eligible for this path

Award duration: up to 3 consecutive academic years, or until you earn your first bachelor's degree, whichever comes first
You do NOT need to complete an associate degree before transferring, but UNT Dallas encourages it through reverse transfer

Eligibility

Am I eligible?

Eligibility differs depending on your path. Select your path below to see the requirements that apply to you.

For students graduating in the Class of 2027, enrolling Fall 2027-2028. You qualify as a 2027-2028 first-year student if you meet ALL of the following:

High School Attendance	Attended a participating Dallas County high school for the full 2026-2027 school year and graduated with at least a high school diploma. Must graduate between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027 to be eligible for Fall 2027 (December 2026 graduates are eligible, but funding doesn't begin until Fall 2027)
UNT Dallas Admission	Met all UNT Dallas undergraduate admission criteria and been admitted into a degree-granting program
Promise Deadlines	Met all Dallas County Promise deadlines: Promise Path form, admission application, financial aid application, orientation, and enrollment
Financial Need	Family Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $85,000 or less, an SAI below 6,478, and be Pell Grant AND Texas Grant eligible
Citizenship & Residency	Be a U.S. citizen, or a non-U.S. citizen eligible to complete a FAFSA or TASFA based on Texas residency requirements
Start Term	Start classes the Fall or Spring semester after high school graduation
Continuous Enrollment	Enroll in both Fall AND Spring each year. You may not skip a Fall or Spring semester. After your initial Fall enrollment, you may enroll in Fall, Spring, or Summer terms
Annual Credit Hours	Complete 24 credit hours in the academic year

Stop Out: If you sit out for two consecutive long semesters (Fall or Spring), you must complete an appeal form to continue in the program. UNT Dallas allows a two-semester stop-out before an appeal is required, more flexible than most other Dallas Promise schools.

For students enrolling Fall 2027 through Spring 2028. You qualify as a Dallas County Promise transfer student if you meet ALL of the following:

Submit the UNT Dallas Admissions Application by March 1, 2027

Submit FAFSA or TASFA by March 1, 2027

Submit the FAFSA at studentaid.gov using UNT Dallas school code 042421, or submit the TASFA if you're a Texas resident who isn't a citizen. Financial aid and scholarship funding is limited; aid goes to eligible students with the greatest need who have submitted all required documents, including verification if selected.

Whether you're a first-time student or a Dallas College transfer heading to UNT Dallas, both your admission application and your FAFSA or TASFA are due by this date. Transfer students should also start their application process as early as July 1, 2026.

Renewal Requirements

Keeping the award for 2028-2029 and beyond

Once enrolled at UNT Dallas, you must meet all of the following each year to continue receiving Promise funding:

Enroll in and earn at least 24 semester credit hours for the academic year
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and meet UNT Dallas's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards at the end of the academic year (GPA is calculated at the end of each term)
Stay within the 4-year eligibility window from your initial enrollment

Not all charges are covered by Promise, and receipt of funding is not a guarantee. Enroll in a payment plan to avoid being dropped for non-payment.

Once enrolled at UNT Dallas as a transfer student, you must meet all of the following each year:

Straight answers

Does Dallas County Promise cover all of my costs at UNT Dallas?

No. This is a last-dollar, tuition-only award. Budget separately for mandatory fees, instructional fees, housing, supplies, transportation, parking, and food. Funding is also limited and prioritized by admission date, so applying early gives you the best chance of receiving it.

What's the difference between Path 1 and Path 2?

Path 1 is for students who go straight to UNT Dallas after high school (with or without an associate degree). The award lasts up to 4 academic years, or until you earn your first bachelor's degree. Path 2 is for students who transfer from Dallas College. The award lasts up to 3 consecutive academic years. Unlike most other Promise schools, Path 2 does NOT require you to complete an associate degree before transferring.

Do I need to complete an associate degree before transferring?

No. This is unique to UNT Dallas. You do NOT need to complete an associate degree before transferring from Dallas College. You're still encouraged to do so through the reverse transfer process, which sends credits you earn at UNT Dallas back to Dallas College so you can complete your associate degree even after transferring.

What happens if I skip a Fall or Spring semester?

UNT Dallas is more flexible than most Promise partner schools here: you can sit out for up to one Fall or Spring semester without any issue. Only after two consecutive missed long semesters do you need to complete an appeal form to continue in the program. The award only covers Fall and Spring, plus Summer for continuing students. It does not cover a first-time student's initial Summer term.

Can I start in the Spring instead of the Fall?

Yes. Path 1 students may start classes the Fall or Spring semester right after high school graduation, which is more flexible than most Promise schools that require a Fall start.

What support comes with the award?

Every Promise Scholar is paired with a UNT Dallas success coach and academic advisor for ongoing support. Path 1 students can also participate in a Summer bridge program before their first Fall semester.

Can I get outside scholarships too?

Yes, you can receive other private and institutional scholarships or grant funds. Contact the UNT Dallas Financial Aid Office for details. You must still accept all scholarships and grant aid you're eligible for, including Pell, state grants, and institutional scholarships.

Can I transfer my award to another school, or give it to someone else?

No. You may not transfer the award to another college or university, return to UNT Dallas and receive funds while attending another institution, transfer the award to another person, or receive a refund for unused Promise dollars.
